Excellent handmade traditional Anatolian block-printed scarf edged with crocheted lacework (oya) from the bridal chest... Unique!

"Oya" is the language of Anatolian Women…

Anatolia’s thousand and one species of plants and gaily colored flowers are reborn in the imagination and inner eye of its women. The history of the decorative edging known in Europe as ‘Turkish lace’ is thought to date back as far as the 8th century B.C. to the Phrygians of Anatolia.

Traditionally, a Turkish young girl and women in her family make many block-printed scarves (yazma) with "oya" and keep them in a bridal chest along with the other Turkish handicraft until the girl gets married. After the marriage the woman wears some of them and later puts them in the chest again, this time to keep for her daughters.

These laceworks are made with tools such as awls, needles, weaver’s shuttles and hair-pins has different names depending on the tool and the technique used. The “oya” patterns have countless variations, depending on the region and the feelings of the woman.
The “oya” are crocheted around the block-printed scarves for them to be used as headdresses, funeral head coverings, the edges of towels and napkins and as decorative elements in many other places. In the Aegean region even men’s headdresses were decked with layers of oya. (www.turkishculture.org)
